Topic: “Tour and presentation of United Blood Services and what they do”
Members and guests met at the United Blood Services, 112 E. 8th Street, in Cheyenne where everyone was given a tour of the facility along with detailed information of what the United Blood Services was all about. Our two newest members, Melanie DaMoude and Margie Hartigan with the City of Cheyenne Building Permits Division were in attendance today. Sharon Roberts-Meyers, our host and UBS Blood Drive Organizer explained that the Cheyenne United Blood Services was a regionalized Non-Profit organization. Cheyenne UBS serves a multitude of communities in the region including Cheyenne and Sidney, NE. Through the Cheyenne UBS, whole blood (RBC), blood platelets, and plasma may be donated. Blood may be kept for 42 days; Platelets (a blood product from whole blood and is in fact, distinguished by male of female varieties) may be kept for only one week; and Plasma, which can be frozen and kept for a year.
Sharon explained that Cheyenne UBS and BioLife Services are similar in that they both take donations of blood products, however Cheyenne UBS only has blood products that are transfused to others. Cheyenne UBS is considered a manufacturing business in that multiple blood products are made available for hospitals and related medical sources. BioLife sells the plasma and they do not use whole blood or platelets. As we moved through the building, Sharon detailed each area and what was accomplished to complete the needs of the UBS. There are continual drains on the resources of the Cheyenne UBS (and other Blood Services through out the nation), so there is continual training and recruiting effort accomplished by the Cheyenne UBS and the many-many businesses and individuals in the community and through out the state. The Cheyenne UBS in fact, works continually with Cheyenne as well as other Wyoming communities for blood drives and is in continual need to replace their shelves of blood and blood products. O negative is considered the universal blood type and everyone was urged to donate blood (especially if you have O negative). But no matter what your blood type, Sharon urged everyone to donate! To be more up with the world of Internet and computers, one may even log onto BloodHero.com to schedule a time to donate blood! All Cheyenne UBS records of donors and blood donations are restricted per FDA, HIPAA, kept under highest of security and other federal regulation, and are stored electronically. Some paper work is accomplished, however once the data is entered into the computer, the paper work is shredded. Since 2003, when blood drive crews go out of the main Cheyenne facility (and to other communities) for blood drives, all information on the lap top computers is downloaded when they come back into the Cheyenne UBS. Daily log reports are printed on paper but then shredded. Upcoming dates of interest will be the largest blood drive of the year, to be held June 26th in Cheyenne and their May Unity Day, which is organized through Churches in the Cheyenne area. Today’s tour and presentation was very interesting and well valued by all in attendance. Meeting was adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
