Topic: Tour of the R. L. Sherard Water Treatment Plant

The water treatment plant is owned and operated by the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities. It operates 24 hours a day seven days a week. There are two operators on duty at all times. The operators are licensed and must take 21 hours of continuing education units every three years to maintain his/her license.

The raw water comes into the treatment plant from the Hog Park Aquifer through Crystal and Granite reservoirs at the rate of eight million gallons per day. The water goes through several filtering processes where chlorine, soda ash and fluoride are add to kill bacteria, attract foreign particles and treat the water. The filtering and treatment processes are constantly monitored manually and by computer. Besides the water from the Hog Park Aquifer, the city owns wells that it draws water from and has four water storage tanks which have a 5 million to 15 million gallon capacity depending upon the tank.

Mr. O'Brion ended the tour in the lab with a demonstration of how the processed water is tested for ph levels.

After the tour Donna Crock thanked Mr. O'Brion and invited him to have lunch with us in plant's lunch/break room.
