Guests: Patsy Roehr and Edith Fuqua, WYDOT

Speaker: Jeff Fox, Division Chief of Training Complex

Rich Wilson opened the meeting by welcoming everyone. Rich suggested to the chapter members that instead of mailing the monthly newsletters that we e-mail them in pdf format if no one objects. In addition, Rich mentioned that we may consider changing the monthly meeting to the second Tuesday or Wednesday of each month since the Kiwanis meets on Thursdays. After enjoying a pizza lunch, Rich introduced the guest speaker, Jeff Fox.

Jeff Fox has been employed as a firefighter since 1978. He began his career as a firefighter, worked his way to Engineer, Lieutenant, Assistant Chief, and is currently the Division Chief of the Training Complex. He was the interim Fire Chief from July 2001 through August 2002 and served as the Local I.A.F.F. Union President.

According to Jeff, the Training Complex was funded half by the City and half by the State (State Lands and Investments) for approximately 3.2 million dollars. The complex construction was completed last August and is considered one of the best state of the art facilities in the Rocky Mountain Region. The facility site is approximately 30 acres and 7.5 acres are developed. The facility is used for various purposes including training for the K-9 Unit, State Car Passenger Seat Training, SWAT Training, Frontier Refinery HASMAT Training and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Training. Police officers from all over the county are staying in the living quarters on the second floor for a nominal fee for K-9 Training that is being conducted now. Jeff also plans to start a Paramedic Program beginning in September 2004.

The tour began in the main building in the East Training Room which is used for firefighters to come into when they have their entire gear on, offices for the captain and training support and main training room. The Apparatus Room houses the fire trucks that the trainees use to learn how operate the trucks. The next building we toured was the Tower. This building uses artificial smoke and sprinkler systems. Each floor is configured differently for various types of search and rescue. The Burn Building utilizes cloth, paper, straw and classic combustibles to simulate fires. Each room in the Burn Building is constructed with concrete and rebar frames with tiles on the ceiling. After touring the various buildings, we returned to the main building to the second floor living quarters which has sleeping areas, bathrooms, kitchen, living area, the Hazardous Materials Coordinators office and Workout Room. The tour concluded in the East Training Room. Jeff answered questions from the members. Jeff noted the importance of the IT people that support his staff.
