Members and guests met at Poor Richards Restaurant in Cheyenne where everyone enjoyed lunch and visiting with each other. Following lunch, members and guests introduced themselves and Wendy Kinkade, programs chair, introduced the speakers, Gary Hickman and Jon Cecil.
Gary and Jon provided a brief overview on the City/County Health Department and the role they played in obtaining the funding that was acquired through Homeland Security grants to purchase the City/County Health Dept. Mobile Response Unit (“Unit”). They explained the process that went into finding the right type of Unit, working with the dealership in remodeling the Unit to fit their specific needs. They discussed the different programs they use the Unit for besides just emergency/disaster purposes. Some of those programs are as follows: immunizations in the schools, flu shots for nursing homes, hand-washing demonstrations for training purposes, West Nile virus or bird influenza testing station, and as a check point station for Frontier Days.
Following Gary and Jon’s presentation we then were provided a tour of the Unit. They have internet access through wireless technology, cell phone contact in many remote areas because of configurations set up in the unit to be able to receive signals more clearly, and the capability to be directly connected with 911 Emergency Management, Police Department and Sheriff’s Department in case of emergencies or disasters.
