Topic: “Tour of Belvoir Ranch, owned by City of Cheyenne, WY”
Members and guests met at the City of Cheyenne parking lot and traveled west of Cheyenne for an ‘abbreviated tour’ of the Belvoir Ranch. Three vehicles were furnished to carry everyone and the tour began on the southwest end of the Belvoir Ranch accessed from Harriman Road. Chuck Lanham and Kristy Anderson furnished copies of a map of the Belvoir Ranch and surrounding areas with tour points of interest, as well as printed information that related to each of the stops for the tour.
After entering at the Harriman Road-South access (southern most homestead), we stopped at the homestead location where the foundation is all that is left and Chuck Lanham spoke of the historical points of the homestead and how rough it had to be in the 1880’s to try to make a living in agriculture in this area. Continuing south we passed by the old state quarry, and traveling further south, everyone was treated to viewing the Big Hole and Big Hole Rim area. It was awesome! Chuck Lanham explained the Big Hole (majority of which is located in Colorado) and Big Hole Rim (part of the Belvoir Ranch) area is now held in partnership with the Nature Conservancy.
Next we traveled back down to the Harriman Road Entrance, which took everyone to the Atlas Missile and corral site. We briefly viewed the Atlas site as Chuck explained how the site functioned, when it was abandoned, and possible plans for the historic missile site area. We then followed the road north and east down into the Lone Tree Creek drainage where we passed by the Williams homestead, old state quarry & cultural sites. Following the road east, we left the Belvoir briefly at the Warren exit on I-80, and traveled east to Otto Road where we then re-entered Belvoir holdings at the Borie Field bridge. After passing through a portion of the Borie Field (oil wells), everyone viewed the main Belvoir Ranch house and hay meadows where Carl Zunker, the ranch manager lives (eastern most location of the Belvoir).
Today’s Belvoir Ranch tour and presentations by Chuck Lanham and Carl Zunker was very interesting and with the addition of the beautiful weather, everyone in attendance thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed the efforts and time spent enabling our Chapter with this outstanding opportunity.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by,
Pat Newbern, Vice President
