Members and guests met at the Barrett Building in Cheyenne and rode together to Denver for the tour of the NARA (National Archives and Records Administration) Center. A stop was made at 240 Union Restaurant where our group met up with members from the Northern Colorado Chapter for lunch. We then proceeded on to Building 48 in the Denver Federal Center for a tour at 1:00 of the NARA Records Center. In addition to both Wyoming and Northern Colorado Chapter members and guests, Denver Mile High Chapter members also met us and were the hosts of making the arrangements for the tour for all of our chapters.

After a brief introduction and overview of NARA we were divided into several groups to tour the two different facilities. We started out with a tour of the Archives Center where it was explained they only maintain 3% of federal records for the Rocky Mountain States at this facility. There is more than 48,000 cubic feet of historical records that include photographs, maps, architectural drawings that were created or received by nearly 80 Federal agencies, including Federal courts. The area is temperature controlled for the preservation of these records. The next area was a tour of the Records Center. These two areas are located in one building and divided by steel fire safety doors. The Records Center is divided into different colored areas for easier identification of locating records (Green, Blue, Rose, Pink, and Yellow Rooms). Boxes are labeled with a number assigned to that particular agency, the year records are deposited into the facility, and identifying number of box (i.e. 518-05-251). At one time IRS records were stored at this facility, but have recently been removed from this facility and transferred to an underground facility in Kansas. Agencies must pay the NARA Records Center to store their boxes. There are fees assigned for transferring the records, researching a request, disposition of records, and storage of records. Any time a box is handled, a fee is charged for whatever is being done with the box. Between the two areas there is approximately 1,000,000 cubic feet of storage. The Denver NARA facility’s website can be located at www.archives.gov/facilities/co/denver.html . The tour concluded at approximately 3:00 p.m. where all chapters converged in an area to network before heading back to our respective locations.
